What is Disciple Bible Study?
Disciple Bible Study is an opportunity for adults to join Dr. Vaughn Story for 34 weeks to read and survey the books of the Bible from Genesis through Revelation. This course will also explore the Bible’s recurring key ideas and major themes. Seventeen weeks of the first semester are spent exploring the Old Testament, and the remaining 17 weeks of the second semester are spent exploring the New Testament. Two concurrent evening Disciple Bible Study classes are offered for adults this year. Persons may choose to enroll in a Tuesday or a Thursday evening class.
What is the focus of Disciple Bible Study?
The focus of Disciple Bible Study is helping persons learn directly from the text of the Bible, through a study of the whole Bible, how to be a faithful follower of Lord Jesus Christ.
For whom is this course designed?
The course is designed for adults (19 years and older) who know nothing or something about the content of the Bible.
What’s required of a person to participate in this course?
Participants need a desire to read and study the Bible, a good study Bible, and a copy of the Disciple Bible Study Manual. Additionally, participants must be willing to set aside regular times throughout the week to read and study assigned passages in their Bible and study manual.
Regular attendance to a weekly, two-hour long, small-group experience is also required.
Those wanting to participate in either the Tuesday OR the Thursday evening Disciple Bible Study class must attend only ONE of the following four scheduled Orientation and Review meetings: Tuesday, July 28 or Aug. 4, OR Thursday, July 30 or Aug. 6. All orientation and review meetings will meet 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM in Room 2818. Each meeting is an opportunity to meet the teacher and to learn more about the course’s content, structure, and time commitment. At the conclusion of each meeting, persons can officially enroll in the course and purchase their Disciple Study Manual. Cost for the course is $38, which covers materials for both semesters. To sign up for one of the Orientation meetings, call the Registration Hotline at 392-1191. This does NOT register you for the class, only for the Orientation.
What is the schedule for the course?
This course begins and ends within the time span of a public school’s academic year. “Times off” from weekly classes are scheduled for major holidays, Asbury all-church annual events, and public school Fall and Spring Breaks.
Disciple Bible Study’s Week #1 classes begin as follows: Class A (Tuesday, August 11, 6:30 – 8:30 PM, Room 2818). Class B (Thursday, August 13, 6:30 – 8:30 PM, Room 2818). Child care is provided for 6-weeks- to Grade 6-aged children.
What happens in class?
Participants meet together once a week for two hours to share and discuss their insights from the past week’s assigned Bible and study manual readings. Class activities are focused on learning how to practice Christian discipleship by applying materials read and studied at home and information viewed, taught, and discussed during class. Disciple Bible Study is led by a well-trained, experienced teacher who uses different teaching methodologies to complement various adult learning styles.
How large are the classes?
Participation in each one of the two classes is limited to 100 persons. The class seating arrangement consists of six-person small groups seated at round tables.
Testimonials ~
DBS has caused me to focus on creating study habits in reading the Bible. In doing so I have developed a desire to read it more rather than depending on a minister to explain it to me. My relationship with God has become more personal in nature and I understand that God’s life is within me now. I have always been in awe of God and could only cry when I felt his presence. Now I can offer short prayers throughout the day as thoughts about God come to me. I am more comfortable talking about our Savior.

The Bible review and OVERVIEWS during DBS are wonderfully helpful. I liked the length of the study. It is short enough to complete, but long enough to give a sense of real accomplishment.
Jim C.
I loved sharing with my DBS table of friends. I appreciated their prayers and fellowship each week.
Jan E.
Because of DBS, God’s word has once again become alive and renewed in my heart. Some of the things discussed during DBS I have known all of my Christian life, but I gained new perspective and fresh insights into the heart of God! I am better equipped to serve Him and more anxious to seek more ways daily to be His disciple through serving others. Outstanding! I recommend every Christian do this study.
