Volunteer Opportunities

A & W
Adult Discipleship Communities may choose to "adopt" a class at Whitman, beginning the 2006-2007 school year.

Some ways groups or communities can be involved might include (but are certainly not limited to): providing kleenex, hand sanditizer, pencils, good behavior small "rewards" (like small erasers, candy, little things), hats and mittens, etc. for class room or individual use. (They receive school supplies through Title I funding.)

Another way a group could help: provide funds to assist in field trip costs and also send a couple of volunteers (if needed) to go on the field trip with the class. The classes generally take 1 or 2 field trips a year.

Please contact Barbie Paige at 250-9194 if you have any questions or to volunteer for anything.

Whitman has a new Science teacher who has a list of needed items. Her name is Nancy Long and her e-mail is longna@tulsaschools.org.

Needs:

  • Items needed at Walt Whitman Elementary (Asbury's adopta school) are listed below. The needs are on-going for all school year as the items are "consumables". Please leave any donations either at the church's south welcome desk or at Barbie Paige's home. Either way, please e-mail Barbie (bepaige@hotmail.com) and let her know that there is something to pick up and she will gladly deliver. EVERYTHING is greatly appreciated!! Many thanks!!
  • Kleenex, hand sanditizer, ziploc bags, new children's underwear and socks (any school age size), any children's books (used is fine), construction paper, children's clothes (used is fine...especially needed are shorts and sweat pants), trinkets.
  • "Reading buddies" and other volunteers. Training is provided. Time commitment is the school year...weekly or bi-monthly.

Because HE Lives
Available to come and do presentations at the church/communities and bring Caleb, the therapy dog, as needed. You can contact them at 455-9231 to schedule a visit.

“Blessings For Kids” Project
The “Blessings For Kids” project is a new volunteer opportunity to encourage friends to volunteer their time and talents at home or in their own groups to benefit the children at the Children’s Home, Boy’s Ranch, and Child S.H.A.R.E. Do you know persons who would like to volunteer some time with a project for the kids? Do they like to Quilt? Knit? Make wood projects? Have other creative talents? Items will be made and donated for sale at benefit functions and craft shows with the proceeds benefiting special projects at our ministry sites such as the educational programs and other special needs. The focus of the project will be things for children of all ages – baby blankets, afghans, cuddle blankets, toys, books, tote bags, activity bags, quilts, and so much more. Items can be for babies through teenagers.

Volunteers are also needed to work on the committee planning and organizing this effort.

For information or to volunteer for the “Blessings For Kids” committee, contact Barbara Wright at 493-5957 (w), 252-7710 (h), or 798-8912 (c) or email at blwright1@yahoo.com

Boy’s Ranch
We have need of a video projector if you know of anyone who may have access to one or might be willing to donate the funds for this.

Needs:

  • Hay for our animals; if anyone has a resource for this please let us know.
  • Personnel: teacher in their alternative school and a couple to serve as family counselors and a ranch foreman
  • Individual or group to sponsor a boy. This can range from only providing a gift for birthday and Christmas to providing substantial support including clothing and other needs.

Contact Mark Howard at 918-487-5281 if interested.

Frances Willard Ministry Center/ Child S.H.A.R.E.
If you have any friends or family that you think would be interested in becoming part of making a difference with Child S.H.A.R.E. send them our way. We have a great need not only for more full-time families, but for respite families and volunteers as well.

Volunteers are needed with child care coverage for support group meetings. Meetings are on the third Monday of each month at New Haven UMC. They are asking for a church or group to commit to a certain month(s) of the year to provide child care workers. They need to be there no later than 6:30 and plan to stay until 9:00 pm. The last two months they have needed 6 workers and will probably be up to needing 10 workers each time by the end of the year. This can include adults and youth. Contact Candace at 583-9506 if an individual or group is interested in assisting the program in this way.

For more information contact Ruth Meck (299-9673) or the MOW office (627-4103).
