Is Fasting a Commandment?
Nowhere in Scripture do we find Biblical laws that require regular fasting, nor do we find a direct command to fast. Jesus gives instruction on fasting in the sermon on the Mount. He states: “And whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do.” (Matthew 6:16) Jesus did not say “If you fast”, neither did he say “You must fast”, He seemed to make the assumption that people would fast, and what was needed was instruction on how to do it properly.

What is Fasting? Throughout Scripture, fasting refers to abstaining from food for spiritual purposes. It stands in contrast to the hunger strike, or for health reasons such as dieting. Biblical fasting always centers on spiritual purposes.

There are different types of fasts.

The Normal Fast: This involves abstaining from all food, solids or liquids except water. In the forty day fast of Jesus, we are told that “He ate nothing” and toward the end of the fast that “He was hungry.” Satan tempted Him to eat, indicating that the abstaining was from food, but not necessarily from water. (Luke 4:2)

The Partial Fast: The Bible describes what could be considered a partial fast: that is, there is restriction of diet, but not total abstention. The Old Testament prophet Daniel, participated in a partial fast once for three weeks, when he “ate no delicacies, no meat or wine.” (Daniel 10:3)

If you feel led by God to seek His face through fasting combined with prayer, then decide which type of fast best fits your personal situation.

WEEK 1 (April 9-15) - Prayer

Scripture for the week:
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
- Colossians 4:2

Sunday
Pray that Asbury becomes a House of Prayer. We want to pray first, always and continually with thanks. May each of us recognize that prayer is Your desire for all, not just a few. Transform us into righteous men and women whose prayers are powerful and effective.

Monday
Pray for every Asbury member to see answers to prayer and for those answers to be a testimony of God’s faithfulness.

Tuesday
Father, in the midst of all that is changing in my world and life, remind me again that Your eternal promises will never change. They are absolutely dependable because You are the same yesterday, today and forever. If I ask anything according to Your will, You hear me and I know that I have what I ask of You.

Wednesday
Pray that our first response as Christians will be to pray when we become anxious about any circumstance.

Thursday
Lord we praise You for the mission outreach of Asbury. We pray specifically for the other United Methodist churches in the Tulsa area and the Baltic Methodist Theological Seminary in Estonia that will benefit from Mission Possible.

Friday (A time of fasting)
Praise God for “Pray For All” which enables every member of Asbury to be prayed for on a daily basis. Pray for obedient, listening hearts to hear God’s guidance.

Saturday
Thank You Lord for being our example and teacher in how to pray. Give us yielded hearts as we seek Your guidance daily through prayer.

WEEK 2 (April 16-22) - Children

Scripture for the week:
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me,
and do not hinder them; for the kingdom of
heaven belongs to such as these.” - Matthew 19:14

Sunday
Pray for our children to know the love of Christ and to experience God’s blessing every time they are at Asbury.

Monday
Lord, help parents and other Asbury members’ be sensitive to the needs of the children’s ministry. Give us a desire and willingness to assist and support.

Tuesday
Help our children grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man. Give the body of Asbury wisdom to set a godly example of faith in You, so that they will see Jesus in the way we live our lives.

Wednesday
Give our children a love for Your Holy Word and a desire to live according to it. Help them learn that by following Jesus’ example, they can come to know You.

Thursday
Pray for wisdom for the children’s ministry staff and volunteers as they expand their ministry opportunities.

Friday (A time of fasting)
Please station Your holy angels around our children. Protect them physically, emotionally and spiritually. I pray that the thief will not steal our lambs or rob them of Your blessings.

Saturday
Prepare our children’s hearts to hear the message of salvation and to accept Jesus as their Savior and Lord.

WEEK 3 (April 23-29) - Youth

Scripture for the week:
Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young,
but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love,
in faith and in purity. - I Timothy 4:12

Sunday
Pray for our youth to come to know Christ and to grow in their walk with Him so when temptations come they will stand firm.

Monday
Pray that our youth will invite their un-churched friends to come to youth activities and worship.

Tuesday
Pray for wisdom and creativity for our youth leaders and staff as they expand the ministry opportunities in the new facility and as they continue in the present facility until completion.

Wednesday
Holy Spirit, help Asbury’s youth appropriate Your power so they will be bold witnesses of their faith to their peers. Help them stand up for Jesus in all things.

Thursday
Lord, help parents and other Asbury members’ be sensitive to the needs of the youth ministry. Give us a desire and willingness to assist and support.

Friday (A time of fasting)
Help our youth to make godly choices and protect them from Satan’s devices. Give them strength to resist immorality and flee from impurity in thought, word and deed.

Saturday
Give your angels charge over our youth to accompany and defend and preserve them in all their ways. Help them to live in a way that will glorify You.

WEEK 4 (April 30-May 6) - Sacrifice

Scripture for the week:
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. - Romans 12:1

Sunday
Pray everyone will realize the importance of their contribution. Pray that each person will give according to God’s guidance and remember that God looks for equal sacrifice not equal giving.

Monday
Lord, each and every gift makes a difference to my church. Teach me to give in ways that actually make a difference in my life.

Tuesday
Spend some time today asking God to help you let go of those things, including money, to which you may be clinging too tightly, and ask Him to help you trust Him with those areas of your life. Ask Him to show you ways He wants you to deny yourself.

Wednesday
In light of Your love, it is a privilege to give even out of poverty. I choose to trust You Lord, to give even beyond my apparent ability.

Thursday
Pray that the time, talents, witness, gifts and service given by members of the Asbury family will be a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to You, because of the work You are doing in our lives.

Friday (A time of fasting)
Please give me a clear understanding of what You want me to do, and then enable me to do it in such a way that my life will be a constant hymn of praise, a sacrificial offering to You.

Saturday
Give me eyes to see from Your perspective and a heart willing to give up something that I think is important, so that Your plans will be accomplished through Mission Possible.

WEEK 5 (May 7-May 13) - Faith

Scripture for the week:
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. - Hebrews 11:6

Sunday
Lord, give us Your direction so that we may understand where You are leading us and then give us the courage to follow.

Monday
Help us to step out in faith to attempt seemingly impossible things knowing that You are with us and that You go before us.

Tuesday
Help me be diligent in seeking Your will and when I have found it, to live it by faith and through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Wednesday
Pray today that God would give us faith in the area of finances. Pray that He would speak to our hearts and give us confidence to step out in faith in this area, believing that He will bless us abundantly as we do so.

Thursday
Help me remember that the cross is a sign of how much You love me and the extent to which You were willing to go to make me Your own. I pray that my faith will be manifested by actions that are pleasing to You, since faith without action is dead.

Friday (A time of fasting)
Help me remember that all that I have comes from You, that You supply my needs according to Your riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Help me remember that I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me. I pray that whatever I do in word or deed will be done in Your Name and with thankfulness to You.

Saturday
Father, help us grow in grace and knowledge and teach us to trust in Your wisdom. Thank You that Your Word is always true and dependable. Help us to see all things through Your eyes, Lord.
Give us an unwavering faith.

WEEK 6 (May 14-May 20) - Love and Obedience

Scripture for the week:
And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. - II John 6

Sunday
Lord, I seek Your will and Your way in my life. I pray that I will be obedient to what you want to do through me.

Monday
Pray for obedience of the Great Commandment to “Love the Lord” and
to “Love one another” and the Great Commission “Go into all the world”.
Pray for open hearts.

Tuesday
Pray that those who are called to give time, talents and money will do so out
of a spirit of obedience to Christ Himself, knowing that He promises to provide for all our needs.

Wednesday
Lord, when Your call challenges me,
it is easy for me to excuse myself. Compel me to respond in obedience.

Thursday
Help me remember the kind of obedience You expect from me. Thank You for the assurance that obedience always brings spiritual blessing.

Friday (A time of fasting)
Ask God to give you a passionate and sincere love for Him. Ask Him to bring
to mind ways He desires that you specifically and practically live out this love. Ask Him for a heart that longs to express genuine love rather than a heart that feels compelled to do so out of a sense of obligation.

Saturday
I pray that You will have first place in
my life. Cause me to be firmly established in You, with a heart of gratitude and obedience.
